Wondering what colour eyes your little one will have? You might have to wait a while to be certain, but in the meantime use our calculator to estimate your baby’s eye colour probability.
If you’ve got a little bub on the way, one of the most exciting things is seeing who they take after.
The inheritance of eye colour comes down to genes. Most of the genes that determine eye colour play a part in the production, transport, or storage of a pigment called melanin. A person’s eye colour is a result of the amount and quality of melanin in the iris. More melanin in the iris will result in brown eyes and less melanin can result in blue.
This calculator is based on a very basic genetic model of brown eyes being a dominant trait over green and blue eyes, and green eyes being dominant over blue. However, we know the inheritance of eye colour can be much more complex than this equation, and often comes down to multiple genes. In fact, it’s quite possible for two blue-eyed parents to have a brown eyed child!
Another fun fact to keep in mind is that most Caucasian babies are born with blue eyes, which darken over time, with the most dramatic changes happening between 6 and 9 months. So you may actually have to wait a while to be 100% sure of your baby’s eye colour.
