Mental health support from your cover

At Medibank, we’re here to support your health and that of your family. If you are experiencing mental health issues, we can help members with hospital coverΔ access support when you need it and get the most out of your cover. We are also here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide mental health support over the phone, at no extra cost.

Mental Health Phone Support

If you are a Medibank member with hospital cover, you can access Medibank Mental Health Phone Support to speak to a registered mental health professional any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1800 644 325~.

We can help with information about signs and symptoms of mental health concerns, the best place to seek help, how to support a loved one, advice on next steps, and help you search for support services. Where appropriate, we can also offer a follow-up service to check how your help-seeking journey is progressing.

No waiting periods on psychology services

We have removed the 2-month waiting period on psychology services on extras and packaged products. This means that you can begin accessing psychology extras benefits (up to annual limits) when you upgrade to these products, or include them when you join us.

Mental Health Waiver

If you are an eligible member^ with hospital cover and have already served your waiting period for Restricted in-hospital psychiatric treatment, the Mental Health Waiver gives you the option to upgrade your cover to one with Included in-hospital psychiatric treatment and choose to have the 2-month waiting period for those higher benefits waived.

To use the Mental Health Waiver contact us on 132 331 or via 24/7 live chat. You can also grant authority to another person to make changes to your policy on your behalf.

In-hospital psychiatric treatment

If you have Gold level hospital cover, your health insurance can help pay towards psychiatric treatment in a private hospital, including hospital accommodation and any medical charges raised by doctors where a Medicare benefit is payable. Out of pockets and waiting periods may apply depending on the type of cover you have and the hospital you’re admitted to. If you’re unsure what’s included in your cover, check your policy or call us to find out.

Members with Hospital cover~ can talk with a mental health professional over the phone in relation to any mental health or emotional concern, 24 hours a day 7 days a week on 1800 644 325.

New telehealth services

Medibank members with eligible extras can now access telehealth services—including psychology, physiotherapy, dietetics, occupational therapy, podiatry, exercise physiology, and speech therapy—and claim for services undertaken from 14 April until further notice.#

Medibank has a wide range of health and wellbeing services to support eligible members with their mental health.

#    Check your cover summary to see if these services are included on your extras cover and if any waiting periods or annual limits apply.

^    To be eligible for the waiver, you need to have held hospital cover without a break of more than 2 months. You can only use the Mental Health Waiver once in your lifetime. The waiver only applies to the 2-month waiting period for the higher Included benefits for in-hospital psychiatric services and all other applicable waiting periods will continue to apply.
