How to use your Extras cover for mental health support

Psychology and counselling claims

Medibank Extras pay benefits towards consultations with a psychologist or Medibank-recognised counsellor.§ How much you get back will depend on your level of Extras cover and remaining annual limit. 

No waiting periods on psychology and counselling consultations

If you’re a new member or upgraded your cover recently to include mental health support, we’ll pay benefits towards psychology and counselling consultations without the need to serve waiting periods.§

How to use your Hospital cover for mental health support 

Hospital psychiatric services

For Gold Level Hospital cover members, who have served their 2 month waiting periods, Medibank can help pay towards hospital psychiatric services in a private hospital. 

Your cover can pay towards hospital accommodation and any medical costs raised by doctors where a Medicare benefit is payable.

There may be out of pocket costs, which depends on the hospital you’re admitted to and what your treating specialists charge. Speak to your treating specialist about what your out-of-pocket costs may be.

Mental Health Waiver

Eligible members^ with hospital cover who have served a waiting period for Restricted hospital psychiatric services on Basic, Silver or Bronze Hospital cover, can choose to upgrade their cover to one with included hospital psychiatric services, and have the 2-month waiting period for those higher benefits on psychiatric services waived. This waiver applies only once per lifetime.

To use the Mental Health Waiver contact us on 132 331 or via 24/7 live chat. You can also grant authority to another person to make changes to your policy on your behalf.

With Medibank Mental Health Phone Support, members with Hospital cover can talk with a mental health professional over the phone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 1800 644 325.~

Or, if you prefer to manage your mental health on your own terms, the Medibank Better Minds app is included with Hospital cover. Through the app members who need extra support can get two free consultation with a counsellor or psychologist. The app empowers members to take a more proactive and hands-on approach to managing their mental health.

~ OSHC members should call the Student Health and Support Line on 1800 887 283.

Not available for members with extras only cover, Overseas Student Health Cover or Overseas Workers or Visitors Health Cover.

§ For members with mental health support included in their Extras cover. Annual limits apply. Counsellors must be registered with Australian Counselling Association, Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, Australian Traditional Medicine Society.   

^ To be eligible for the waiver, you need to have held hospital cover without a break of more than 2 months. You can only use the Mental Health Waiver once in your lifetime. The waiver only applies to the 2-month waiting period for the higher Included benefits for in-hospital psychiatric services and all other applicable waiting periods will continue to apply.
