What is a premium, and how is it calculated?
Your premium is the amount you pay to keep your health cover active. How much you pay depends on a few things, including:
- The type of cover you’ve chosen
- Who’s covered (just you, or your family too)
- Your state or territory
- Any rebates, surcharges or loadings that apply
Premiums are usually reviewed each year, and we’ll always let you know in advance if there are any changes.
What is the Australian Government Rebate?
To help you reduce the cost of your premium, it’s important that you apply for the Australian Government Rebate (AGR) on private health insurance. The Australian Government Rebate is an amount that the government puts towards your health cover to make it more affordable. Many Australians receive this rebate as a % reduction on their private health cover premiums, but alternatively, you can receive it as a refundable tax offset when you lodge your tax return.
What is Lifetime Health Cover loading (LHC)?
Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading is a government initiative to help ease the reliance on the public healthcare system and incentivise younger Australians to take out private health insurance earlier. It’s calculated based on your age when you first take out Hospital cover, and is usually 2% on top of your Hospital cover premium for each year you are without cover after the age of 30.
