This Cookies and Similar Technologies Statement explains how Medibank uses cookies and similar technologies on our websites, social media pages and mobile applications, and in certain emails (together, our Platforms). These technologies help our Platforms function properly, enhance performance, help us understand how people use them, and support our analytics and advertising activities.
This statement explains what these technologies are, why we use them (including how we work with analytics, social media and digital advertising partners such as Google, Meta, Microsoft Advertising, and other providers), and the choices available to you.
In this Cookies and Similar Technologies Statement, Medibank, we, us or our means Medibank Private Limited ABN 47 080 890 259 and, where relevant, its related bodies corporate that operate our Platforms.
This Cookies and Similar Technologies Statement should be read together with our Privacy Policy, which explains in more detail how we collect, use, disclose and protect personal information.
Cookies are small text files that are stored on your browser or device when you visit a website or use an app. They are widely used to make websites and apps work, or work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owner of the site or app.
We and our platform providers also use other technologies that work in a similar way, including:
- Pixels and tags – small pieces of code or images embedded in our web pages, emails or apps that help us and our platform providers understand whether something has loaded or been viewed, such as when you open an email or visit a page.
- Software Development Kits (SDKs) – tools built into our mobile apps that support functionality and help us understand app performance, diagnose issues and improve reliability. Depending on the SDK, they may collect information such as app usage, device identifiers and crash data.
- Local storage and similar technologies – tools that store information on your device, such as in your browser’s local storage, to help our Platforms remember your settings, support functionality and provide a more consistent experience. They perform similar functions to cookies.
In this statement we refer to all of these collectively as cookies or experience technologies. They allow us and our partners to recognise your device, remember your preferences, improve functionality, analyse usage, and provide more relevant content and advertising.
We use cookies and similar technologies on our Platforms for the following purposes:
- To operate our Platforms (strictly necessary). These cookies are needed so our Platforms work properly. They support core features such as security, logging in, navigating pages, completing forms, making payments, and remembering selections or information you have entered during a quote, application, purchase or redemption process.
- To remember your settings and improve functionality (functional/preferences).These cookies remember choices you make (such as language, region or login state) and help us provide enhanced, more personalised features, such as live messaging or remembering where you left off in a quote or your website journey.
- To understand and improve performance (analytics / measurement). We use analytics cookies to understand how people use our Platforms, such as which pages are visited, how long they are viewed, which links are clicked and whether error messages are shown. This helps us improve the design, performance and usability of our Platforms. These cookies may be set by us or by our analytics partners.
- To personalise content and experiences (personalisation). Some cookies help us tailor the content and experiences you see on our Platforms, such as recommending content or products and services that may be more relevant to you, or testing different versions of a page. This helps us test and personalise content.
- To support our advertising and marketing activities. We use cookies and similar technologies to:
- Show Medibank advertising on our own Platforms and on other websites, apps and digital channels,
- Help ensure advertising is more relevant and is not shown too often, or in circumstances where it may be less relevant, tailor certain marketing communications we send you, where permitted, and
- Understand and measure the performance of our advertising and marketing campaigns, including whether people visit a page, start or complete a quote, or purchase a product after seeing an ad.
We do this using our own cookies and similar technologies, and with the support of our digital advertising and social media partners, such as major search engines and social media platforms. These partners may set up or use their own technologies on our Platforms or in our emails. They may collect information from those interactions and combine it with information from their own services to provide advertising, measurement and reporting services to us.
Some of the third parties we work with operate outside of Australia. We may disclose information collected via cookies and similar technologies to those third parties. These third parties may be located in countries including the USA, UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Japan and within the European Union. For more information, see the “Disclosure overseas” section of our Privacy Policy. Third parties that set or use cookies and similar technologies on our Platforms or in our emails may retain information collected through those technologies in accordance with their own privacy policies and retention practices.
