Does private health insurance pay benefits towards mental health?
While Medicare helps with the costs of some mental health treatments (like visiting a doctor for mental health assessments and claiming for sessions; or admission to a public psychiatric hospital), private health cover with Medibank can pay benefits towards private hospital admissions and mental health consultations with psychologists, counsellors and social workers without needing a Mental Health Care Plan.
Depending on your type and level of cover, there are two main ways having private health insurance can help with mental health treatment:
Hospital psychiatric services (in-patient hospital care only)
- Some Medibank Hospital covers include or have restricted% hospital psychiatric services for the treatment and care of patients with psychiatric, mental, addiction or behavioural disorders.
- Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose mental health issues, prescribe medications for mental health conditions and can admit you to hospital for treatment.
Mental health support (out-of-hospital care)
- Some Medibank Extras covers include benefits towards consultations with a recognised psychologist, counsellor or mental health social worker@ which can help towards out-of-pocket costs if you don’t have a mental health treatment plan or have used up your Medicare-subsidised mental health sessions.
- Medibank also pays benefits towards pharmacogenetic testing for all conditions& which can help your doctors to better understand how your body reacts to specific medication.

If you're treated in a private hospital for a Restricted Service, you are likely to incur substantial out-of-pocket expenses because this minimum benefit will not be enough to cover all hospital costs. For Restricted services as a private patient in a public hospital we will pay minimum shared room benefits.
> Two month waiting period applies. We'll pay a benefit up to an annual limit per membership towards any admission fee ("facility fee") charged by the Private Hospital for patients attending a Private Accident and Emergency Department. The fee amount varies by Private Hospital and does not include medical and other charges (such as charges for diagnostic imaging or pathology), so out of pocket expenses may still apply. Only available at Private Hospitals with an Accident and Emergency Department. Members will need to submit a claim to receive the benefit and may have to pay upfront.
