Is a walk as good as a run?

News — Posted 13/08/13

A solid, brisk walk may be just as good as going for a run in maintaining a healthy heart and cardiovascular system.

A study published in the American Heart Association has found that walkers lowered their risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as runners.

Over 45,000 runners and walkers took part in the study conducted over six years. Researchers found that even though running required slightly higher energy levels than moderate intensity walking, both translated into a reduction in risk factors for heart disease.

The results are encouraging as walking can be seen as more appealing, sustainable and achievable for a wider group of people than running, leading to greater health benefits for more people.

With the benefits now well documented, it’s a great incentive to get out there and walk briskly everyday to improve your health.
