Research and collaboration
Advancing health research is another way Medibank is working towards building better health for the next generation. The Medibank Health Research Fund (MHRF) provides funding to support innovative health related research projects throughout Australia with contributions from Medibank, our members, employees and the wider community.
Each year, Medibank contributes more than $400,000 directly into the MHRF. In addition Medibank matches employee donations to the fund dollar-for-dollar.
In 2015, we provided eight Medibank Health Research Fund grants for projects that aim to change the way patients perceive and participate in their own treatment regimes; investigate the use of new technologies such as Smartphone Apps and SMS messaging and improve patient-recovery from treatment to reduce their likelihood of hospital re-admission.

Indigenous health & wellbeing
We believe every Australian has the right to good health and we are proud that we were the first private health insurer to launch a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in 2012.
Our Indigenous Employment Strategy is part of our RAP commitment and an important step towards lifting Indigenous employment throughout the organisation.
We believe in the link between education and opportunity. We express this by supporting Yalari as it provides learning pathways through scholarships for Indigenous children from rural and remote communities. Our involvement and participation alongside Yalari students and volunteers in the biennial 100 km Commemorative Walk in Queensland –a test of endurance and teamwork – inspires respect for Aboriginal history and culture.
In bringing our reconciliation commitment to life, we have learned that a partnership approach that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations is the best way to generate positive, long term outcomes. Our Indigenous Community Grants Program is another way we connect, with $100,000 directed to projects run by Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations throughout Australia each year.

Emergency relief & recovery
Partnering with Australian Red Cross is the way Medibank continues its long-standing tradition of supporting communities in times of need.
Encouraging people to plan and prepare for unexpected disaster is part of our focus. Medibank supports the Australian Red Cross National Disaster Preparedness Week each year as well as contributing to relief in times of crisis in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region when it’s needed most.
Supporting events with healthy outcomes
At Medibank we are committed to investing in the health and wellbeing of the Australian community. This includes supporting events that encourage Australians to be healthy and active.
Medibank has been a proud sponsor of the Australian Open since 2012. Our association with this world-class event enables us to actively promote our Generation Better message of encouraging and supporting Australians to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
The partnership between Medibank and the Icehouse, Melbourne’s premier ice sports facility located at Docklands, promotes health and fitness through active participation in ice sports and leisure. The partnership also provides further support to the Icehouse’s acclaimed schools program and Victoria’s national ice hockey team, Melbourne Ice.
Medibank Wave Warriors is a Junior Surf Lifesaving event run for ages 9 to under 15. Developed by Zane Holmes in 2011, the event encourages children to be active through participation in Junior Surf Lifesavings. The 2013/14 season saw Medibank Wave Warriors tour Australia visiting Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.
Medibank Melbourne Marathon, Perth City to Surf and Bridge to Brisbane
Medibank is the proudsponsor of 3 popular running festivals in Australia. These festivals have something for everyone, ranging from short distance walks to full marathons. The events bring together families, friends and the community, and showcase the best Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane have to offer.
