Understanding the Australian healthcare system
In Australia there are different ways to get care for illness or injury. It’s important to know the basics on how the healthcare system works so you can get the right care when you need it.
Visit a GP
A doctor who is qualified in general medical practice is called General Practitioner (GP). A GP should be your first point of contact for any non-emergency and general health problems.
Go to emergency
If you are seriously injured or in need of urgent medical attention, go to a hospital Emergency Department (ED). It’s important to note that you may have to wait a while if urgent medical attention isn’t required.
Call 000 for an ambulance
If you, or someone nearby, are seriously injured or in need of urgent medical attention, such as a heart attack, sudden collapse, or a fall from a great height. You can also request for an interpreter on the call if required.
