Understanding more about Medibank’s Growing Family packages

Private health insurance policy options for you and your growing family.

When it comes to choosing a private health insurance policy for you and your growing family, we know that you will need a policy that meets your changing needs. Your preferences if you want to give birth in a private or public hospital, or if you want to choose your obstetrician, and whether you want access to pregnancy and early childhood services, will all affect the type of policy that is right for you. We have designed a range of cover options to help assist you with different stages of your pregnancy.

Choose from these health cover options designed especially for growing families:

Hospital Benefits

Each package provides you and your family with different levels of hospital cover. As well as being covered for the services and treatments listed on the Cover Summary, Medibank’s Growing Family packages also provide benefits for thousands of other additional in-hospital services, some of which may be useful to you, like the ones shown in the table below. Medibank will pay benefits for hospital admissions for these procedures.

Extras benefits

Each Medibank Growing Family package allows you to select either Growing Family 60 or Growing Family 70, where you will receive either 60% back or 70% back on Extras and 100% back for kids at Members’ Choice Providers1. As well as being covered for Extras benefits like general dental, major dental and optical, there are a number of other benefits that can help you at every stage of pregnancy, birth and early childhood. Waiting periods explained

Waiting periods are the length of time each member needs to wait after taking out or upgrading cover, before they can claim or receive benefits included under their policy.

Waiting periods apply to new members, as well as to any changes to your existing cover to include new services or treatments. If you’re switching providers, we’ll recognise waiting periods on potential treatment options you’ve already served, so you’ll only need to serve any balance with us before you can claim.

If you’re planning on starting or extending your family, it’s important that you’re aware there is a 12-month waiting period for obstetrics-related services that must be served before the baby is born. Remember babies can come early, so it’s important to take this into account when you start planning your family. For example, if a mother-to-be has held a lower level of cover (e.g. without obstetrics) and wants to upgrade her cover to include obstetrics, she’ll need to serve the full 12-month waiting period before she can claim. Similarly, if the mother-to-be joins her partner’s policy, the 12-month obstetrics waiting period will still need to be served before she can claim.

A 12-month waiting period applies for all pre-existing conditions.

Pre-existing condition

A pre-existing condition is an ailment, illness or condition with signs and symptoms that, in the opinion of a Medical Practitioner appointed by Medibank, existed at any time in the six months before you either took out cover, or transferred to a higher level of cover. A 12-month waiting period applies for all pre-existing conditions.

Learn more about hospital excess

An excess is the amount you pay on your first admission of the calendar year before Medibank contributes to your hospital costs. Choosing a higher excess will lower your premium. The same excess will apply to each adult member admitted to hospital per calendar year. No hospital excess applies to children on the Growing Family packages.
