Things to know before travelling to the UK
Do I need a visa for the UK?
Australians can visit the UK for up to 6 months without a visa for tourism, visiting family or short business trips.
The UK has rolled out an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visa exempt travellers, which Australians need to apply for.
Note that the UK is separate from travelling to Schengen countries as it is not counted in this region.
It can help to:
- make sure your passport is valid for the entirety of your stay
- carry proof of onward travel or return
- check ETA requirements before booking your trip.
How to stay safe in the UK
Stay informed by checking Smartraveller for the latest travel advice. Global incidents and official warnings may influence your trip and could impact your insurance cover. Refer to the PDS for details, and visit Medibank’s travel alerts for updates.
Key tips can be:
- keep valuables close, and be mindful in crowded city centres
- monitor the news and avoid protest areas
- be up to date with the latest advice from the Australian Government on smartraveler.com.au.
Money and cards in the UK
The UK is largely cashless, and accepts mobile payments and contactless card in most places. Everywhere in the UK accepts the British Pound.
It can be a good idea before travelling to:
- advise your bank you are travelling
- consider travel cards, credit cards or other options that offer no, or low international transaction fees
- be aware of currency conversion rates, and how much it is costing you to withdraw cash. Airports, private ATMs and hotels can all charge higher amounts than elsewhere.
UK travel seasons
The UK is not known to be a beach lovers' destination, but can offer some beautiful mild temperatures during its peak season.
Peak tourist season is during Summer or June to August. It has the longest daylight hours with average temperatures in the low 20°C.
Spring and Autumn are both popular shoulder seasons with fewer tourists and mild temperatures around 15°C.
Winter in the UK is known for its short days, during Dec to Jan it can be less than 8 hours of daylight and temperatures touching 1°C.
