We asked CERES nursery manager Laurel Coad how to get started in the garden.

1. Decide what you want to grow. First of all, think about what you like to eat!

2. Think fresh. Grow food that needs to be fresh when it’s on your plate. For example potatoes are great and easy to do, but I wouldn’t prioritise that over leafy greens and herbs like spinach, rocket, kale, peas, beans, cucumber and zucchini, which are fast growing and easy to grow over spring.

3. Choose your planting method. Are you growing in pots or in the ground? If in the ground, we recommend building a raised bed and creating a no-dig garden using layers of straw, compost and manure. If you’re working in pots, select potting mix and make sure you ask about how much you can put in a pot.

4. Feed those plants! Obviously the most important part is sun and water. We’re so lucky in Australia we’re such a resource-rich country, and in Melbourne you get sun and rain five times a day!

5. Don't overlook trees. If you have more room you can put in some fruit trees, like oranges, peaches, apple, apricots and more that are good backyard species.
