Walk 4 Water

Pledge to walk 10,000 steps a day to make a contribution to a world-changing cause.

Get active this March and help WaterAid raise funds for practical, sustainable water projects in some of the poorest communities around the world. All you need to do is walk 10,000 steps each day for five days – which as an added bonus, is great for your fitness and wellbeing.

Why Walk 4 Water?

Over 700 million people in developing communities around the world don’t have access to safe water. For many of these people, walking long distances for any water at all is a daily necessity. The average distance is 8 km (around 10,000 steps), and the weight of water they carry is commonly 20 kg, the same weight as an average car tyre.

This daily trek for water is usually carried out by women and children, which means women are deprived of the opportunity to earn money for their families, and children are unable to receive an education. Not to mention, drinking unsafe water – which is often all that’s available – can make people very sick.

WaterAid works in 26 countries to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene in the world’s poorest communities. Last year alone, the organisation helped 1.9 million people access safe water.

How you can help

Sign up, pledge to walk 10,000 steps each day over 16-20 March and receive a pedometer from WaterAid to track your steps. Then it’s time to start fundraising! Just $200 can provide two hand pumps to a village in Papua New Guinea, while $550 can provide pipes and other hardware to build a gravity fed water system.
