What is Medicare?
Medicare is Australia’s public healthcare system - helping Australians access health and public hospital services for little or no cost.1 It subsidises some of the costs of health services and products listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).2
Difference between Medicare and private health insurance
Medicare is funded by our taxes, and while it provides great coverage towards the costs of many health services Australians need, it doesn’t include everything. That’s where private health insurance (PHI) comes in. PHI providers, like Medibank, can help with greater support throughout your hospital experience, shorter wait times for elective surgery2 and bridging the gap by paying benefits towards other health services that can help you prioritise your health.
Hospital cover can give you more say in where you’re treated, who you’re treated by.* Once you’ve had your treatment, you may be able to recover with the comfort and privacy of your own room in a private hospital.^
If a service is listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and Included or Restricted under your cover, Medicare will pay 75% and we’ll pay 25% of the MBS fee. This means where the provider charges you no more than the MBS fee, you won’t have an out-of-pocket expense for those inpatient medical services.

Meanwhile, Extras cover can help with day-to-day health needs that aren’t typically covered by Medicare like new prescription glasses, dental check-ups, remedial massage and more. Without extras cover, you may have to pay the full cost out of your own pocket.
