The best thing about Extras cover is you can take a proactive approach to your health and wellbeing with regular check-ups and treatments.

For most Extras services, there is generally no contribution from Medicare – zero, zilch, nada – so having private health insurance could be a handy way to help with some of the costs.

You get 100% back on most optical items up to annual limits at any recognised provider. This includes frames, prescription lenses, prescription sunglasses and contacts (some lens coatings excluded.) Note that on some covers, fixed benefits and sub-limits apply.

If you're taking a proactive approach to your own mental health, some Medibank Extras products provide benefits toward clinical psychology. Medibank products have no waiting period for clinical psychology benefits, so you can claim straight away (subject to annual limits).

Things you should know

Waiting periods

You will need to serve waiting periods before you can claim on Extras services under your cover, including 12 months for some dental services.

The amount you can claim is usually capped by annual limits (or in the case of orthodontics, over a lifetime limit).
