In this episode, I welcomed Poppy Griffiths back to the podcast to challenge traditional views of high performance. Poppy’s work across elite sport and corporate environments highlights a common issue: many people are performing well on paper while quietly running on empty. Success often gets defined by output alone, without enough attention paid to how that performance is sustained or what it costs individuals over time.

The performance fit system

Poppy introduced her Performance Fit System, built around four pillars:

  • Purpose fit
  • Mind fit
  • Body fit
  • Relationship fit.

What resonated strongly was the idea that performance isn’t isolated. If one pillar drops away, the system becomes unstable. Many high performers rely heavily on passion and willpower, pushing through long hours and constant pressure. While this can work short term, it almost always leads to exhaustion, disengagement or burnout if left unchecked.

What leaders can apply immediately

For leaders, this episode offered very practical takeaways. Sustainable performance comes from small, consistent behaviours, not big initiatives. Leaders can help by regularly reconnecting people to purpose, normalising emotional regulation, encouraging recovery and celebrating progress rather than just outcomes. Poppy also shared practical “mind fit” strategies, such as noticing early stress signals and naming internal saboteurs, which help people respond thoughtfully rather than react under pressure.

 

Final thoughts

This conversation reinforced that sustainable high performance is built, not demanded. When leaders focus on systems that support people holistically, results become more consistent and wellbeing is protected.
