When is the best time to travel to Europe?

The European summer months, from June to September, are typically the busiest, with many tourists flocking to sunny destinations like SpainGreece, and Italy. This period is often seen as the peak season for a Europe trip, offering plenty of fun activities in the warm weather.

However, Europe’s diverse landscapes and experiences mean that there’s an exciting holiday waiting for you year-round. The "shoulder season" (the months between the peak and off-seasons) offers a chance to enjoy plenty of activities with fewer crowds.

For a unique experience, the Nordic and other Northern European countries are perfect during the off-season (November to March). From marveling at the Northern Lights in Norway to skiing in the snowy Alps of France and Switzerland, there's so much to discover. If you're planning a ski trip in the mountains, you may want to consider snow sports cover.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Australian citizens don’t need a visa to visit the Schengen Area in Europe for stays of less than 90 days within a 180-day period. The Schengen Area includes 27 European countries that share common border rules, allowing Australian citizens to travel freely between them without requiring a separate visa or going through border controls at each country.

However, there are certain limitations on visa-free travel to Schengen countries, including how the 90/180-day rule is calculated, the purpose of your visit, and a minimum passport validity of 3 months from the date you plan to leave the Schengen Area. For more detailed information, refer to Smartraveller's Guide to entry requirements in Europe.

Most European countries outside the Schengen Area have their own visa and border regulations, including the United Kingdom. However, many non-Schengen countries in Europe allow Australian citizens to enter visa-free for tourism and stay for up to 90 days. Some countries, like the UK, may also permit longer visa-free stays. For more details on their visa-free tourism programs, click here. You can also visit the ETIAS website for the latest updates on entry requirements for travel to Europe.

Is it safe to travel to Europe?

With so many countries in Europe, there are several considerations travellers should keep in mind before setting off. Some locations in Europe may be:

  • Under a threat of terrorism
  • Engaged in ongoing military conflict

Travellers should stay up to date with the latest guidance from the Australian Government on Smartraveller. Some global events and government advice might affect your upcoming trip and travel insurance cover (refer to PDS for exclusions), you can also check Medibank travel alerts for regular updates.

Smartraveller may also issue location-specific warnings for concerns like pickpocketing, phone and bag snatching, and muggings, which travellers should be aware of and cautious about.

Planning for adventure activities in Europe?

Europe has many iconic destinations like the Swiss Alps, Montenegro, Croatia, and Finland, all renowned for their adventure offerings. Popular activities available across Europe, including skiing, rock climbing, kayaking, and trekking.

Smartraveller recommends you:

  • Talk to your doctor before you go,and ensure you're medically fit for the activities.
  • Be aware of the risks associated with these activities
  • Check the safety standards of operators
  • Ensure the operator you choose meets industry standard
  • Stay informed about severe weather conditions and potential risks in remote areas
