Life insurance is a way to help provide financial protection for someone else if you pass away or are diagnosed with a terminal illness1.
For couples, that usually means putting cover in place so your partner has financial support if something happens to you.
With Medibank Life Insurance, cover is set up as individual policies, not a joint policy. Each person has their own cover, which can be updated over time as your situation changes.

Things to consider when getting life insurance as a couple
When couples explore life insurance, there’s often more to think about than a single cover amount. While Medibank Life Insurance is held as individual policies, couples may look at how each policy fits within their shared financial picture.
Some general considerations couples often think about include:
How household finances are shared
Couples may look at how each income contributes to everyday living costs and whether some expenses would continue if one partner were no longer able to contribute to these costs.
Shared financial commitments
Things like a mortgage, rent or other joint debts may still need to be managed by one partner, depending on the situation.
Different roles within the relationship
In some relationships, one partner may earn more, work part‑time, or take on more caring responsibilities. Individual policies allow for different cover amounts based on personal circumstances.
How long cover may be relevant
Couples sometimes consider how long financial support might be needed. For example, while children are dependent or larger debts remain.
Flexibility over time
Because cover is held individually, each policy can be changed separately as circumstances change, such as moving house, starting a family or changing work arrangements.
Medibank Life Insurance doesn’t offer a joint policy, but allows couples to hold separate policies to give them flexibility while still helping support shared financial responsibilities.

How does Medibank Income Protection work for couples?
Life insurance can help support your partner if you pass away or are diagnosed with a terminal illness. Income protection is a form of life insurance that can provide you with a monthly benefit up to a percentage of your income (up to a certain amount), if you’re unable to work due to sickness or injury. The monthly benefit can help you keep up with cost-of-living expenses, like paying your rent, mortgage repayments and everyday bills so you can focus on your recovery.
Like Medibank Life Insurance, Medibank Income Protection is offered as individual policies, allowing each partner to take out their own cover.
