Episode 151 - Shift Worker Burnout with Emma Seymour

Emma Seymour, the CFO of Deputy, shares valuable insights from the Shift Pulse Report, emphasising the need for clarity, control and support for shift workers.

What we covered in our chat

In this episode, I spoke with Emma Seymour about the wellbeing challenges facing shift workers. These workers are a group that’s often underrepresented in traditional workplace wellbeing discussions. Using large‑scale workforce data, Emma highlighted how unpredictability, lack of control and last‑minute roster changes are major contributors to stress and disengagement across industries like healthcare, hospitality and call centres.

Why control is critical for wellbeing

One of the clearest insights from this conversation was how strongly wellbeing correlates with control. When employees have little say over shifts, inadequate notice of rosters or frequent changes, stress levels rise and recovery becomes harder. These pressures can be compounded by cost‑of‑living concerns and fatigue, creating a cycle that drives absenteeism and turnover. Conversely, even small improvements in predictability and transparency significantly improve morale and energy.

What organisations can do differently

Emma shared practical ways organisations can respond, including better use of workforce technology, clearer communication and genuine feedback loops. Importantly, this isn’t just about convenience; it’s about dignity and trust. When employees feel heard and can plan their lives outside of work, engagement improves. Leaders also play a role by acting on feedback and acknowledging the complexity of shift‑based work rather than treating it as transactional.

Final thoughts

Wellbeing improves when people have clarity, control and connection. When individuals understand what is expected of them, have a sense of influence over how their work is carried out, and feel connected to their team and purpose, the overall experience of work becomes more positive and sustainable. These elements help reduce confusion, support better focus, and make it easier for people to navigate day-to-day demands with greater confidence.
