Some hospital services will be removed from your cover on 1 April 2019.
Benefits for some hospital services will be removed, changed or added to your hospital cover.
Your hospital cover includes treatments under a number of clinical categories, such as joint reconstructions and wisdom teeth. Each category is made up of a list of Medicare Benefit Schedule (MBS) items associated with those treatments.
Currently, what’s included in these clinical categories varies between health insurers. So, the government has decided to standardise these categories as well as the MBS items within them. This means some MBS items will be moving from one clinical category to another.
What’s changing for you?
From 1 April 2019, some MBS items currently Included under your hospital cover will be removed or changed, and some may be added. To put these changes into perspective, your cover currently includes 400+ MBS items. The impact of these changes will depend on your personal circumstances. We have outlined the changes in the table below.
This means Medibank will no longer pay benefits for admissions related to the MBS items being Excluded.

Pre-booked or receiving ongoing hospital treatment?
We’ll still pay benefits under your current hospital cover toward ongoing courses of treatments, or pre-booked hospital admissions scheduled to occur after 1 April 2019. The treatment or admission must have been booked on or before 1 March 2019 and you’ll need to provide written confirmation of the course of treatment or pre-booked hospital admission (e.g. a copy of your hospital admission form).
If you want to continue receiving benefits for the MBS items being removed, you may want to review your cover to ensure you’re on a cover that best suits your needs. If you do this before 1 May 2019 you will avoid having to serve any additional waiting periods for services included on Corporate Hospital Basic.
