Support for older Australians to live at home

Often as we age, managing medical conditions, home maintenance and getting around can make it harder to live independently. Recognising these challenges, there are government programs in place to support older Australians to live at home safely and happily.

What is a Home Care Package?

Home Care Packages are funded by the Australian Government to help older Australians continue to live at home safely and happily. Home Care Packages can be used to help:

• Keep you well and independent: Nursing support or allied health services such as physiotherapy, personal care such as help showering and hygiene, meal preparation and diet support.
• Keep you safe: Help with basic chores and home maintenance, equipment to get around and adapt, for example, a walking frame.
• Keep you connected: Transport and support to take part in social groups and activities.

Packages range from around $8,750 a year for basic care to $50,750 a year for those with high care needs. Once you have been approved for funding by the Australian Government, you can choose a service provider that is right for you to deliver the package that meets your needs. The government then pays the support package directly to your provider.

Who is eligible for a Home Care Package?

To be eligible you must be aged 65 or over, and need coordinated services to stay at home, or identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and be aged 55 or over. Your eligibility is based on a face-to-face assessment undertaken by the Australian Government. You can read more about applying for a Home Care Package on the My Aged Care website.

Will it cost me anything?
