Pets are great companions, but you already know that because you want another one. So, what do you need to consider before you add another one to the pack?

The benefits of having two pets

Add a second pet and double the fun

More furry friends means the comfort and joy they bring you each day multiplies; especially in the cuddle department. Pets are a great way to boost your mental health, reduce stress and feelings of loneliness.

Your current pet will get a new playmate, excellent for exercise, as well as a buddy to keep them company when you’re not home, which may help with separation anxiety or bored pet mischief. Multiple pets can also help the social skills of both animals as they learn to adapt to each other.

More love to give

If you decide to adopt a second pet from an animal shelter, it could save their life. In 2019/20, the RSPCA/animal shelters in Australia took in over 70,000 cats and dogs. With so many pets who need a home it’s worth considering the difference you can make to the life of a cat or dog.

Getting your house ready

You won’t need to rush out and buy lots of new supplies because pets can share toys, beds, bowls, treats and food. So, your place is already more than ready for a second pet.

The challenges of having two pets

The addition of another pet is exciting but there will be challenges. You’ll need to invest more time in your pets to make sure they get the attention they need. Individual play time and grooming is essential to ensure you don’t end up with two bored pets or trigger a competition for your attention.

A new pet means the social structure of your family will change and it’s important that your current pet doesn’t feel left out. Again, individual attention is important. Don’t neglect or rapidly alter the routine you’ve established.

What to consider when getting a second pet

Do your research to make sure you’ve got pets and breeds that are compatible to avoid conflict.

Plan ahead so your new pet is introduced into your home in a controlled way and it does not disrupt your current pet’s routine too much.

There may be additional expenses that come with multiple pets such as training and vet care. Keep in mind that Medibank Pet Insurance offer 5% off the second pet.
