Benefits for families
Life with kids can often be unpredictable. That’s where hospital cover can help - so you are prepared for those times when your life takes an unexpected turn. And with Medibank Private cover, you and your family can benefit even when you’re in perfect health.
Having private health insurance makes great financial sense
At Medibank Private we take pride in being the largest Australian-owned health insurer. While we’re the choice for over 3 million Australians who have private health insurance, we want you to get the most value out of having private health insurance. As a member you’ll get a better deal at our Members’ Choice network through capped fees and discounts to help reduce out-of-pocket expenses. You’ll also have access to discounted travel, life and pet insurance. Here are some other reasons why it makes sense to have private health insurance.
Pay less tax
If you don’t have an appropriate level of hospital cover for yourself and all your dependants and your individual taxable income is over $70,000 a year, or for couples and most families your combined income is over $140,000 a year (this threshold increases by $1,500 for each additional child after the first), you may have to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS). This adds up to 1% on your tax bill. So if you’re a family with an annual taxable income of $150,000, by taking out hospital cover for your whole family you can avoid the MLS and save up to $1,500 on your tax bill.
Reduce your premium
Make your health cover more affordable. If you’re eligible, you can reduce your premium by at least 30% with the Federal Government 30% Rebate on private health insurance. The easiest way to access the rebate is to ask us to organise it for you – we’ll automatically deduct your rebate amount from the premium you pay, saving you money.
Protect yourself from a Lifetime Health Cover loading
If you take out hospital cover early in life – and maintain it – you can avoid paying a Federal Government Lifetime Health Cover loading on your Medibank Private premiums.
Private health insurance – it’s only fair
Private health insurance premiums work differently to the insurance you may have for your home or car. All private health insurance funds follow a principle known as ‘community rating’. This means the premium you pay with Medibank Private won’t vary according to things like your gender, health condition or claims history.
Your big kids are covered too
If you have children under the age of 21 or children aged between 21 and 25 who are studying full-time they can stay on your membership at no extra cost. But if they aren’t studying, instead of them taking out their own membership you can choose to take out our Families With Adult Children membership option.
How much will it cost me?
This depends on things like the level of cover you select, what state or territory you live in, whether you have an excess and your type of membership (for example, cover for you and your partner or for you and your children).
Refer to our Quote Tool to determine the best cover to suit your needs.
No excess for kids
You wont’ be charged an excess if your child is hospitalised. This applies to all our hospital covers.
