Choosing whether to go public or private
One of the main decisions you’ll need to make is whether you want to have your baby in a private hospital or a public hospital. Here are your options:
As a private patient in a public or private hospital
In this scenario, you will have the option of choosing your obstetrician and the hospital you want to deliver in. You will need to have pregnancy and birth services (must have Gold level hospital cover) included in your hospital cover in order to claim any benefits from your health insurer for in-hospital services received in relation to your pregnancy, birth and delivery. A 12-month waiting period applies to pregnancy and birth services once you sign up or change your hospital cover to include this.¹
As a public patient in a public hospital
In this scenario, you do not need hospital cover that includes pregnancy and birth services as this is funded by Medicare. There are also no waiting periods if you are a public patient. As a public patient you may not be able to choose your obstetrician or receive care from the same doctor throughout your pregnancy.
What are your options with Medibank?

However, you may wish to have pregnancy-related extras coverage like Medibank's Growing Family Extras or Medibank's My Choice Extras Family cover to support your pregnancy journey (public or private) with antenatal and postnatal services including lactation consultations, pregnancy compression garments and clinical pilates with a physio.² You can combine these Extras covers with any of Medibank's hospital covers.
