Why extras?
Extras cover is for services generally not covered by Medicare, such as dental, optical items and physiotherapy.
The best thing about Extras cover is you can receive benefits back (up to limits) if you decide to take a proactive approach to your family's health and wellbeing with regular check-ups and treatments.
You will need to serve waiting periods before you can claim on Extras services under your cover, including 12 months for orthodontic and some dental services. The amount you can claim is usually capped by annual limits (or in the case of orthodontics, a lifetime limit).
The amount you can claim back at Members’ Choice providers, up to annual limits. Fixed amounts apply at non-Members’ Choice providers, up to annual limits.

We provide 100% back on extras for kids on Silver Plus Families & Growing Family covers at Members’ Choice providers, up to annual limits.³ Everyone in your family can also get 100% back on up to two dental check-ups per calendar year, including x-rays, at any Members’ Choice Advantage dentist, up to annual limits. The same goes for optical at all recognised providers, up to annual limits.
Yes, you can choose from a range of hospital covers to add to your family’s extras cover at any time. This is called combined cover. Click ‘view details’ on an extras cover of your choosing above to find out more.
Waiting periods apply to both hospital and extras covers. For extras, these range from as little as 1 day for ambulance services, 12 months for orthodontics and major dental services, 24 months for blood glucose monitor and blood pressure monitors and 36 months for hearing aids~. Waiting periods are always listed alongside your cover inclusions and annual limits, and in the cover summary. If you’re unsure, chat to one of our experts to find out more.
Your orthodontic entitlement starts with an opening balance, which you can access once your 12 month waiting period is served. The balance is then topped up with an additional amount each 1 January (following the completion of your waiting period) up to a maximum lifetime limit. The benefit you can claim (after serving your waiting period) = Opening Balance + Any top ups - Any benefits ever claimed. Benefits will only be paid towards dental and orthodontic treatments that are administered in person (not via phone or online), by a recognised provider.

Child Dependants can stay on their parent’s cover until they’re 21, or, in some cases, as a Student Dependant or an Adult Dependant until they turn 31, provided they're not married or in a de facto relationship.

1 Eligible members on Medibank extras (excluding Healthy Living Extras and Gold Ultra Health) can claim a maximum of two 100% back dental check-ups per member, per year at a Members’ Choice Advantage provider (including bitewing x-rays where clinically required). For members on eligible extras, the first two check-ups do not count towards your annual limit. Members with Healthy Living Extras can get 100% back on one dental check-up each year at a Members’ Choice Advantage provider (including up to two bitewing x-rays, where clinically required) or at a Members’ Choice provider (excluding x-rays). Members with Gold Ultra Health can get 100% back on up to three dental check-ups at a Members’ Choice or Members’ Choice Advantage provider. Members’ Choice and Members’ Choice Advantage providers are not available in all areas. Two month waiting period applies.
