Rod Laver announced as ambassador for Medibank's Generation Better

Medibank has announced Rod Laver as the ambassador for the organisation's new Generation Better initiative to encourage Australians to lead healthier lives by taking small steps to better health.

George Savvides, Managing Director of Medibank, said the health insurer and health services provider is delighted to have Rod on board to help promote the values that sit behind Generation Better and Medibank's tennis sponsorships.

"Rod Laver is not only a proud Australian and sporting hero to many, he has lived the values of Generation Better throughout his life and his drive to take even the smallest steps to improve his health was no more prominent than during his courageous recovery from stroke.

"We believe Rod is a great fit for Generation Better and our bid to improve the health of Australians. He is the country boy who grew up playing tennis in his back yard in Queensland and pursued his dream. He has become someone we can all take inspiration from," Mr Savvides said.

Rod himself also feels the fit is right and will be in Australia during December and January to support the drive for better health.

"I always loved playing sport and being on the go, but the importance of being healthy and active really hit home when I was paralysed on my right side from stroke. It was the small steps, my determination to do something - no matter how small - that helped me get through that period and recover my mobility. I think I am the walking proof of Generation Better's conviction.

"I am really pleased to be involved with Medibank and hope we can inspire every day Australians in their efforts - no matter how small - to improve their health. It's not about being the best at something but just about doing something," Rod said.

The one year ambassadorship will focus on speaking engagements and appearances during the Australian Open.
