We wanted to take a stand for our employees and create an exceptional experience around parental leave. This year Medibank rewrote the rules, scrapping the titles of ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ carers, replacing it with ‘parents’.
FamilyFlex provides new parents with 14 weeks leave which can be taken over the first two years of a child’s life. In less than a year, FamilyFlex has already led to a positive cultural shift here at Medibank.
I recently spoke to Emma Walsh, CEO of Parents at Work, a provider of workplace education and coaching services about the internal conversations that led to our policy change. Hopefully, our experience will encourage other businesses to reflect on their policies and practices to ensure they support all types of parents and families.
