It’s the ultimate mateship, the bond you develop with your furry mate. It knows no bounds – even when it comes to naming them.

From the new Royal baby to Harry Potter and the Lion King, Australians take inspiration from around the world and get creative when naming their dogs and cats.

The hype surrounding the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son has seen Archie become the 6th most popular name for both cats and dogs across the country.

New data from Medibank Pet Insurance shows that Bella has been the most popular name for dogs over the past 12 months followed by Charlie, Coco, Luna and Max.

When it comes to cats, we may have some Harry Potter fans, with Luna, (aka Luna Lovegood) topping the list followed by Leo, Charlie, Bella, CoCo and Archie.

“Australians love their dogs and cats and we are proud to look after the health and wellbeing of our customers’ best mates,” Medibank Chief Customer Officer David Koczkar said.

“We want to help you keep your pet healthy, so you can enjoy more walks, play time and adventures together.”
