South Australia’s inaugural out-of-hospital service at a city hotel will double in capacity next month to help even more patients leave hospital, and free up beds for those who need them most.

The successful Transition Care Service (TCS) will double from 24 beds across one floor to 48 beds across two floors.

More than 200 patients who no longer require acute care have utilised the service at the Pullman Adelaide since the TCS became operational on 27 February 2025 – and 180 patients have been discharged.

The service is a joint collaboration between SA Health, Amplar Health Home Hospital, and the Pullman Adelaide and provides treatment and care for patients who no longer require acute hospital care to transition to a more appropriate facility while continuing to receive clinical support.

Patients are selected based on their clinical needs, and are monitored by medical practitioners, nurses and allied health professionals, providing patient care before transitioning home or to a more tailored long-term accommodation such as an aged-care home.

South Australia’s Minister for Health and Wellbeing The Hon. Chris Picton said, “When we opened this service earlier this year we were hopeful it would be as successful as it has been, that’s why we’re doubling the amount of beds.” He added,

More than 200 beds across metro Adelaide have been freed up thanks to the Transition Care Service, allowing acute patients to access the care they need in hospital.

Amplar Health Chief Executive, Robert Read echoed the Minister’s comments, “We congratulate the South Australian Government on its commitment to finding and investing in innovative solutions that support the evolving needs of our health system. The expansion of the Transition Care Service is a strong example of how thoughtful investment in out-of-hospital models can improve patient flow and deliver better outcomes for the community.”

Amplar Health brings experience in healthcare delivery to this collaboration. Our skilled health professionals are committed to supporting South Australians through this important health transition – ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right setting, at the right time.
