    Moneghetti's health tips for the medibank melbourne marathon


    You've trained for months, you've broken in your new runners, you're ready to go ... but have you considered the physical and mental strategies you might need to get over the line this Sunday in the Medibank Melbourne Marathon?

    Champion Australian marathon runner, Steve Moneghetti says that long distance races require a lot of preparation to maintain mental and physical strength on the day.

    "You've prepared physically for the Medibank Melbourne Marathon and probably feel the fittest you've ever been, but don't forget to prepare for those other little things that might affect you whilst running," he says. "Sun protection, hydration, and pre-and post-run care are really important factors that might affect you on the day."

    Running and jogging have terrific fitness and social benefits. Medibank recognises these and helps thousands of Australians every day improve their health and wellbeing. Here are some tips from Medibank and Steve Moneghetti on how to get the best possible experience out of the Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival:

    Health check: Even if you're at the pinnacle of your health, get a health check from your doctor before you submit the entry form to make sure you're good to go.

    Stretch before and after you run: It may sound obvious, but many people skip this part. Make sure you don't, as stretching reduces muscle stiffness and improves the range of motion for joints.

    Wear sunscreen: Even on a seemingly mild day, it's still important to cover up from the harsh effects of the Australian sun and slap on a high-factor sunscreen. Remember, you're going to be outdoors for some time.

    Keep hydrated: Be sure to drink plenty of water whilst you're running - as a rule, aim to take in fluid every 5km throughout the race. It can be tricky to drink whilst running, so make sure you incorporate this into your practice runs.

    Stay positive: Let your mind take over your body and focus on what you're achieving. Draw strength from your fellow runners and supporters and remember - you CAN do this.

    Post-run care: Look, you've just ran a Marathon, which is amazing. Take time to feel proud of your achievement, but don't think your healthcare ends here, as your body will take some time to recover.
