Medibank, in collaboration with Diabetes Australia, has announced a new research award supporting innovative early-intervention models in primary care to help prevent type 2 diabetes in Australians at risk.
Funded by the Medibank Better Health Research Hub and Diabetes Australia, the Medibank and Diabetes Australia Research Award will provide up to $200,000 for a two-year research project focused on preventing the progression from pre-diabetes to type 2 diabetes, particularly among priority populations.
The initiative reflects the continued shift in Australia’s health system toward prevention, early action and keeping people well.
Medibank Group Medical Director Dr Shona Sundaraj said the partnership reinforces Medibank’s commitment to driving meaningful change in how healthcare is delivered.
We’re pleased to announce this partnership with Diabetes Australia as part of our ongoing commitment to prevention and supporting Australians before they get sick, Dr Sundaraj said.
“Type 2 diabetes is often preventable, and early action in primary care is essential. This research will help us understand what works — and what doesn’t — so we can share valuable insights with health professionals across the country.
“By investing in prevention, we’re contributing to Australia’s broader health transition toward a system focused on wellbeing, not just treatment.”
The award will support research demonstrating scientific merit, meaningful consumer and community involvement, and strong potential to tangibly improve primary healthcare delivery. A key focus of the collaboration is ensuring research findings are scalable and translatable into real-world practice across Australia’s health system.
