    Putting an arrow through outdated fairy tales about love

    Loneliness is impacting more people across Australia than ever before, which is why Medibank is committed to halving chronic loneliness by 2030.

    In our most recent ‘We are Lonely’ index of over 4200 people in Australia, 56% said they felt lonely on one or more days during a typical week and noted that “Relationships” were the biggest trigger for loneliness.

    And with Valentine’s Day fast approaching, these feelings can be made even worse.

    Thankfully there’s a much more suitable day that’s inclusive of everyone.

    Together with good.film, Medibank is encouraging everyone to focus on today instead, February 13, which is International Self Love Day.

    Karen Oldaker, Medibank Senior Executive Wellbeing and Community said: “#selflovedayte is all about you and is a day where we encourage you to prioritise loving yourselves by celebrating your uniqueness and indulging in activities that nourish you.

    “This date aims to lessen the shame and stigma of loneliness and promote self-esteem by encouraging you to embrace your inner happiness, in whatever form that takes. Because ‘being alone’ or single doesn’t mean you can’t feel love, or bathe in that warm glow of self- worth.”

    Together with good.film, we are encouraging you to treat yourself on Self Love Day. Take yourself to the movies, surround yourself with positive people, read a book, spend some time outside and join a park run to connect with your local community. Do whatever makes you feel good!

    Amy Tyler, co-founder of good.film* commented that “Valentine’s Day is driven by an outdated narrative that we need external validation (like a boyfriend or significant other) to feel love. But that story has changed, and it’s time Valentine’s Day changed too.”

    Throughout February, Good Tix is offering discounted movie tickets for solo dates, where 50% of profits go to reducing loneliness.

    Self Love Day acts as a reminder that no one deserves your love more than you do, and that self-love can become the foundation of a happy, fulfilling life.
