    New chairman of medibank private


    The Minister for Finance and Administration, Senator Nick Minchin, today announced the appointment of Mr Peter Kirby as Chairman of Medibank Private Limited (Medibank).

    "Mr Kirby will bring valued skills and extensive experience to the Board of Medibank," Senator Minchin said.

    "Mr Kirby has a wealth of commercial and leadership experience as the former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CSR Limited, CEO (UK based) of ICI Paints, and Managing Director of Dulux Paints (Australia and New Zealand).

    "The Government much appreciates Mr Kirby's willingness to serve as Chairman of this very important government business enterprise," Senator Minchin said.

    Medibank is Australia's largest private health insurer, providing health insurance to around 2.8 million members.

    Mr Kirby is currently a non-executive director of Macquarie Bank Limited, Orica Limited, and is a former director of the Business Council of Australia. He was recently awarded a Centenary medal for service to business and commerce.

    Mr Kirby has been appointed as Chairman for a period of three years, commencing
    8 February 2004.
