Medibank is proud to join the 15,000 people who will stand together in the Field of Women at the MCG on Saturday 10 May, to show their support for Australians affected by breast cancer.
The event, presented by the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), will see 15,000 people coming together to create a Pink Lady silhouette, representing the number of Australians who are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
Given that 1,173 Medibank members received treatment for breast cancer last year*, this is an important event that Medibank is proud to be associated with. George Savvides, Medibank Managing Director, explains further:
"It's a harrowing fact, but almost everyone will be touched by cancer at some point in their lives, whether they experience it themselves or it affects someone close to them. That is why we are proud to sponsor the Field of Women, as such a powerful image on the MCG ground goes a long way to raising awareness, increasing support and raising funds."
In many instances, Medicare and private health insurance covers a large proportion of medical costs for breast cancer treatment. However, some doctors may charge above the Medicare Benefits Schedule rate, which can lead to out of pocket costs for the patient. Last year, the average total cost** for breast cancer treatment was $3,095 for a subcutaneous mastectomy*** and $1,761 for a full mastectomy. Mr Savvides explains:
"It can be stressful for patients to deal with medical expenses during an already difficult period in their lives. I urge people to discuss costs with their doctor prior to treatment commencing and, if they have private health insurance, checking whether their fund offers a gap cover scheme, where doctors have agreed not to charge over a certain amount for a procedure."
