The Medibank Melbourne Marathon Festival was a great success, and Medibank was extremely proud to be involved. It was fantastic to see so many volunteers, cheer squads and, of course, participants enjoying the day.
Over 32,000 people took part in the 2012 Festival, in many different ways. Some ran the full 42.195km, some did the half marathon, others walked 3km with their families. Many, many more cheered from the sidelines.
That’s the beauty of this event. It’s not just a marathon. It’s a celebration of the human spirit.
Every year, thousands of incredible stories emerge from the Melbourne Marathon Festival. Each of these stories is an inspiration to others keen to take steps towards better health.
See why Jared Tallent wanted to walk the half marathon. Meet the Burt family, who have run 78 marathons between them. Get inspired by Win, a five-year- old with an amazing tale of recovery; and Verena, a woman who overcame all odds to get back on her feet.
At Medibank, we’re committed to helping all Australians live healthier lives. Whether you’re a runner or part of someone’s cheer squad, there are always little changes you can make to live a healthier life. Here are some of our most popular tips for better health.
If you want to boost your overall wellbeing and reduce your risk of a range of lifestyle-related diseases, then it’s important to keep your weight down. Don’t rely on quick fixes – the best way to lose weight is to slowly cut your food intake over an extended period of time, while boosting your level of exercise.
Eating well is about so much more than your weight. It’s also about giving your body the nutrients it needs to ward off disease and help you function at your peak. So make sure you eat plenty of vitamin- and nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables, lean meats and fish; and go for whole grains instead of processed carbs.
A recent study in The Lancet found that even 15 minutes of exercise a day may add years to your life. So even though the marathon’s over for another year, don’t ditch your daily activity. Swap the lift for the stairs, head down to the park with your kids, or walk the last couple of k’s to work – there are plenty of ways to exercise more.
Schedule time in your life to unwind and relax. Whether it’s an organised activity like meditation or tai chi, a daily walk in the park or simply some slow breathing sessions – relaxation is an easy and enjoyable way to reduce the stress and anxiety that may otherwise interfere with your life.
It may sound obvious, but by cutting out the stuff that’s bad for you – think alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine – you’ll enjoy a much healthier lifestyle. These can play havoc with your wellbeing and make you more anxious over the long term.
