6 healthy and festive family activities

Here’s some ideas to stop you throwing all your healthy habits out with the wrapping this christmas

1. Make a fruit Christmas tree

All you need is some fresh seasonal fruit (all those delicious summery colours!), a cone made of foam (which you can get at any craft shop like Spotlight or Lincraft), some toothpicks, and you’re ready to go! It’s a fun family activity the kids will love – and it can double as a lovely table centrepiece.

2. String popcorn instead of tinsel

Air pop or cook some popcorn kernels on the stove, then string with cranberries or cherries with a needle and thread – beautiful and yummy!

3. Play a game cricket

On Christmas afternoon, there’s nothing like the Aussie classic: a game of backyard cricket for the whole family. Not enough space? A family bike ride is another great way to get active after a filling festive lunch.

4. Make your own healthy gifts

Get the kids involved in putting together some healthy gifts for your friends, family, neighbours and visitors. Fill up decorative jars with raw or roasted nuts, homemade granola mix, or your own herbal tea blend, or assemble a hamper full of fresh seasonal fruits, mixed nuts and dried fruits, gourmet pantry staples like extra virgin olive oil or dried pasta, and condiments like tapenades, relishes and chutneys.

5. Cook up a healthy festive storm

Jump in the kitchen and whip up your own delicious treats. From grilled chicken with mango and avocado salsa, to Christmas dark chocolate and fruit bark, there are plenty of healthy and delicious ways to bring the scents and tastes of Christmas into your home.

6. Create a treasure hunt

Set up a treasure hunt for the kids with clues and small hidden presents – it’s a great way to get the little ones running around, and you can be as creative as you like!
