There's nothing like a relaxing soak in a mystical hot spring especially when you're in some of the most picturesque locations around the world. Here are a few of our favourite steam-havens to discover.

1. Beppu, Japan

This famous hot spring city on Japan’s Kyushu island positively steams in winter as vents dotted around town hiss warm air. Take your pick of countless onsen (natural springs) for a delicious soak, stay in one of many traditional inns, and don’t miss the spectacular boiling pools of Hells of Beppu – for viewing only!

2. Air Panas Banjar, Indonesia

Nestled amid lush tropical plants is Air Panas Banjar, natural hot springs west of Lovina in Indonesia. Here, water pours from the mouths of eight stone-carved naga (mythical creatures) into a series of cascading pools sitting pleasantly around 38 degrees.

3. Blue Lagoon, Iceland

One of the most visited attractions in Iceland, Blue Lagoon has an otherworldly quality that makes its milky-blue waters hard to pass up – even with the crowds. Fed mineral-rich water by a nearby geothermal plant, this man-made spa is around an hour’s drive from capital Reykjavik and bookings are a must.

4. Saturnia, Tuscany

A region perhaps better known for its Chianti than its hot springs, the Tuscan town of Saturnia is home to some magnificent thermal baths. Soak up the sulphurous waters and rustic charm at the free public pools, or splash out at one of the exclusive wellness spas in town.
