When you see a doctor (GP or specialist) in Australia there is a set fee for the consultation called the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee. With Working Visa Basic Insurance you are covered for 100% of the MBS fee for most medical services. This means if a doctor only charges the MBS fee you won’t need to pay anything. If they choose to charge above the MBS fee you might have to pay something to cover the difference (an out-of-pocket cost).
You are not covered for any out-of-hospital medical services for fertility treatments, bone marrow & organ transplants, psychiatric or obstetrics-related services.
The MBS fee for item 23 (a GP visit) is $37.60. You visit a doctor that charges $50. Working Visa Basic Insurance pays 100% of the MBS fee. You would pay $50, get back $37.60 from Medibank. Your out-of-pocket cost would be $12.40.
