    Job description:

    In my role I get to think about ways to make healthy behaviours more common and then make them happen. After all, preventing illness and recurrence of disease is the best way to go.

    How does your job contribute to better health?

    Influencing policy makers and organisations to legislate for healthy environments, healthy food and improvement in care has been my prime activity.

    What do you love about your job?

    Working on the Active In Parks program with the People and Parks Foundation is the perfect role for combining my love of the outdoors, my interest in population health, my experience as a General Practitioner and my growing role at the Heart Foundation. What better role could anyone want than to formulate strategies and programs to get more people into the great outdoors?

    Highlights in providing better health outcomes?

    At the Heart Foundation I have been involved in tobacco regulation, food labelling, open space regulation, improvement in cardiac health services and reducing inequity in the heart care system. Basically, keeping hearts healthy and ensuring that if someone has heart disease they get the best care.

    With my role at Parks Victoria, I have developed and commenced an innovative program to get diverse groups of people into parks, with the primary reason to improve their health.

    From your work experience what health tips do you have?

    Healthy lifestyles often seem difficult to achieve. Little changes every day will get you to your targets – such as walking to the shops instead of driving, eating a smaller meal, lying on a rug in a park looking at the clouds. Keep changing on a daily basis and one day you will find you are there!

    Heart Foundation Walking Program and People and Parks Active in Parks Program are both supported by the Medibank Community Fund.
