    Working out with Serena Williams

Tennis superstar Serena Williams shares workout tips for staying in peak form.

Serena Williams, who is perhaps as well known for her fierce competitive streak as her eye-catching fashion and gravity-defying booty – has always kept her training secrets to herself…. until now.

Sixty young fans won the chance to join Serena in a fitness session at Melbourne Central’s Clock Tower, where she debuted the new Nike Training Club App – a workout she created to help girls around the world get access to professional training advice.

be. magazine headed down for the session and managed to get an inside scoop from Serena about how she stays in peak condition in a sport that has no off season at the top.

Throughout the fitness session, Serena’s passion for helping young girls reach their full potential was clear. Sharing some of the advice she got from her own parents, Serena told us they were, “always positive. They were positive with me, so I was positive with myself”. “My Dad made me write down my goals and mine was to win the US Open. And I did it!”

In fact, she did it four times over.

The workout app, which will be available to download from March 2013, is a taste of Serena’s own personal workout, and can be done in small spaces like hotel rooms or your bedroom. The app focuses on core strength exercises, which Serena attributes to helping her stay “lean and mean and injury-free”, despite being 31 in a sport where she could find herself competing against girls half her age. “I’m the happiest and the fittest I’ve been. I still feel like I’m 22 years old,” she told the crowd.

Serena, who admits that sit-ups are the least favorite part of her workout, pumps hip-hop, rock and pop tunes to help keep her motivated. It’s fitting then, that her Nike Club Workout allows you to listen to the tracks you love from your music library while you get your workout instructions from Serena – and that a DJ was on site at the event to keep the fans powering through to the finish.

Serena’s training hints and upbeat attitude throughout the workout certainly made it easier to get there. Let’s hope the app is a good as having the real thing in your ear!
