Knowing where something comes from is important. It allows us to identify and understand it. And recognising where our food comes from is imperative – we put food into our bodies so we expect it to be good for us and to be safe.
But recently we’ve seen the potential hazards of poor food quality control and management. Food provenance is becoming a worldwide issue, and importing and exporting food and food products is an important industry for our farms and factories.
We know we should buy local and organic, but busy lives and higher costs can make this difficult. So what can we do? We can commit to buying food from a number of different sources including online and direct from the farmers, farmers markets, and the supermarket. And we can grow our own. Starting off simply with one herb and one vegetable should do the trick, because we learn intimately what to do, and what not to do, as we grow.
This makes sense because:
1. Growing our own food saves money. Rather than spending $3.95 each time you prepare a dish that requires herbs, you have your own flourishing supply at your fingertips. And growing your own herbs impresses dinner guests.
2. Growing our own food is rewarding. Planting a seed, nurturing a seedling and helping a plant thrive to grow food is worthwhile.
3. Growing our own food is easy. An investment of five minutes a day, before or after work, is enough time to bestow care and attention on a budding plant who will love you back with organic fresh produce that tastes off-the-Richter delicious.
So, next time you’re making your shopping list, add the following:
- Seeds of your favourite herb and veggie
- A chic pot for the garden or kitchen window sill
