    Travel for wellbeing

    From chasing the sun to dipping your toes in thermal springs, a trip can be seriously rejuvenating.

    For centuries people have been traveling for health purposes. There were the ancient Greeks and Egyptians who visited hot springs and baths to boost their wellbeing. The 18th and 19th-century Europeans and Americans flocked to wellness spas to reap the benefits of life-giving mineral springs, or to sanitariums to seek treatment for diseases from gout to liver disorders to bronchitis.

    In more recent times we have seen a surge of holistic health retreats crop up around the world, but they’re not the only way people travel for health. Whether it’s camping in the bush, a trip to the beach or a visit to the mineral springs, there are many ways people continue to take healthy escapes.

    be. magazine spoke to two members with different approaches to taking a rejuvenating break for mind, body and soul.

    Where do you go to get away from it all?

    Chiva Som in Thailand. It’s a three-hour drive from Bangkok’s airport.

    What do you do there and how does it benefit your health?

    Arriving at Chiva Som is immediately relaxing, thanks to the warm weather and lush garden setting overlooking the beach. You can choose a program that best suits how you feel or what you need to work on and people come for a range of reasons. All the programs include delicious healthy food cooked for you, daily massage and time by the pool. There are so many activities to opt for depending on what you want, but I enjoy morning meditation followed by mat pilates, then aqua boxing after breakfast and a healthy cooking class in the afternoon.

    Probably the best thing I find about a stay at Chiva Som is that it is a time to eat well without the usual preparation required and to exercise or indulge in spa treatments as you wish to rejuvenate after a busy time. Rather than going on holiday over-indulging in food and alcohol and returning having undone the good work I try and put towards my health, after a trip to Chiva Som I head home having accelerated my wellness with others having managed the logistics for me, and I return rested, fit and nurtured.

    When do you usually go and why?

    Heading over anytime of year is perfect, as it’s warm all year round. I ideally head over during winter in Australia to break up the cold months with some time in the sun.

    How often do you feel your body or mind needs it?

    Visiting for a week twice a year would be ideal, but any time I can spend there is worthwhile to learn new skills and focus on my health in a relaxed setting.

    Is it something you will continue doing throughout your life to benefit your health?

    Where do you go to get away from it all?

    For a weekend away I go to my beach house at Balnarring. It’s only one hour away from the city, so a weekend break is relatively easy to fit in.

    What do you do there and how does it benefit your health?

    A trip to my beach house is more for my mental health than my physical health. Nothing relaxes me more than a day on the water with my dog fishing. The swell is generally pretty good at Easter time and I don’t mind a surf, although I admit that I am a pretty average surfer.

    When do you usually go and why?

    I enjoy heading there all year round. Summer is obviously a great time to be at the beach, but my favourite time is Easter. The mornings are crisp and the days are clear. The fishing is good at this time of year and the race horses train on the beach in the early morning. It’s also great to get next to the fireplace with a vino.

    How often do you feel your body or mind needs it?

    If I can get to the beach at least once a month I feel it really resets the clock.

    Is it something you will continue doing throughout your life to benefit your health?

    I have always been down there and will always go.
