Teaming up for better cancer care

Medibank members now have access to a unique cancer treatment centre, The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.

Cancer treatment can be scary – there’s no doubt about that. As the only Australian not-for-profit private hospital to provide all cancer related services under one roof, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney strives to relieve some of that discomfort, giving patients world-class cancer care.

Making use of state of the art technology, Lifehouse offers new inpatient facilities including 125 overnight beds, an intensive care unit and eight operating theatres. Patients are supported by a dedicated care team, providing a more personalised approach to treatment.

“Under a conventional model of care, a patient must navigate a complex and fragmented pathway of care, often unaided,” says Lifehouse CEO Eileen Hannagan. “With the launch of Lifehouse’s new inpatient hospital services, a care team supports them through a simpler, personalised and integrated model of care, located within one building.”

What’s more, Lifehouse’s status as a leading research centre means patients have access to innovative treatment options.

“We are proud to be associated with an organisation that is involved in providing true patient centred care and cutting edge cancer research.”

“We have registered 104 clinical trials at Lifehouse over the last 15 months, giving patients access to treatments not currently available to most patients elsewhere. It is rare to find this level of academic cancer research and multidisciplinary clinical review in one place,” Ms Hannagan says.

Medibank is the first insurer to sign an agreement with Lifehouse, providing members with certainty around their private cancer treatment. This means that when Medibank members are admitted to Lifehouse, they will have no or minimal out of pocket expenses for the services provided.

“We are proud to be associated with an organisation that is involved in providing true patient centred care and cutting edge cancer research,” says Dr Andrew Wilson, Medibank’s Executive General Manager of Provider Networks and Integrated Care.

“Due to Medibank’s partnership with Lifehouse, our members can rest assured they will experience a hospital which has an increased ability to treat cancers to the very highest standards, thanks to their evidence-based care and expert multidisciplinary team.

“Our agreement with Lifehouse is part of Medibank’s commitment to improving our members’ healthcare experience, keeping healthcare affordable and providing access to the highest quality care.”
