How to prioritise your health

You might have a lot going on your 30s–maybe you are building your career, starting a family, or both. But while life might seem very busy, you still need prioritise your health.

Find out about the health trends of Aussie men in their 30s, get simple tips and know the health checks you should be getting now.

How healthy are Aussies men in their 30’s?

According to the data in the Medibank Better Health Index*:

  • Anxiety is on the rise. 17.2% reported that they suffer from anxiety. This is up from 6.5% in 2007-08. 12.9% suffer said they from depression.
  • 27.8% suffer from stress. This higher than males in any other age group and up from 23.7% in 2007-08.
  • Only 35.5% fall into the ‘Healthy’ BMI range. 40.8% fall into the ‘Overweight’ range, and 21.4% fall into the ‘Obese’ range. 2.2% fall into the ‘Underweight’ range.
  • Almost 60% have done some formal exercise in the last 3 months. This is up from 51.3% in 2007-08. 19.3% regularly go to the gym/do weight training, 16% regularly go jogging and 42.6% regularly walk for exercise.

Tips for your 30s

  • Find a doctor (GP) you feel comfortable with.
  • Look after your mental health. Talk about your problems or concerns with a friend or family. See your GP or a psychologist if you think you might need professional help.
  • Take time out to pursue a hobby or interest you enjoy.
  • Watch your drinking habits and quit smoking.
  • Keep active. Catch up with friends to exercise or play sport.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Watch your food intake, prepare nutritious meals and eat lots of fruit and vegetables.
  • Look after your skin to avoid skin cancer and check any changes with your GP.
  • Practise safe sex–use a condom.

Health checks to have now

  • Visit your GP for a check-up. Talk to your doctor about your family history, your lifestyle and other medical conditions, to find out what you should be tested and screened for. Talk about any emotional concerns, anxiety, stress and depression you might be experiencing.
  • Check yourself. Examine your testicles for lumps or bumps and if you feel anything unusual get it checked out immediately. Here are some other simple health checks you can do yourself at home.
  • Keep your weight and waist in check. Measure your waist and check your BMI ensure you are at a healthy weight.
  • Visit the dentist every 6 to 12 months. Or as recommended by your dentist. Good oral health not only contributes to a great smile, but also to your general health and wellbeing.   • Make sure you are up to date with your immunisations. If you are planning on travelling, make sure you have the recommended vaccinations before you go.
  • Regularly check your skin for unusual moles or freckles. See your doctor if you notice anything unusual. If you are at high risk - for example, you work outdoors - visit your doctor or dermatologist for a yearly examination.
