Should your child see a podiatrist?

From knock-knees to bow legs, podiatrists can help treat a range of conditions in children.

When you’re a kid, there’s nothing like being able to run around and play freely. If your child is experiencing any pain, discomfort or other troubles with their feet, taking them to see a podiatrist can be a greatly beneficial.

Podiatrists are dedicated health professionals specialising in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders of the foot and lower limb. While the different rates children’s feet develop can make it difficult to determine what is normal development, a discussion with a podiatrist is an important first step if you do have any concerns about your child’s feet.

What can a podiatrist treat?

Podiatrists treat a range of conditions in children, from inward-turning feet to ingrown toenails, and there is a wide variety of treatment options. While by no means exhaustive, here are some of the conditions in children a podiatrist can assist with:

  • Complaints of pain in feet, knees and lower limbs
  • Uneven wear on the soles of shoes
  • Excessively turned in or turned out feet
  • Toe-walking
  • Flat feet
  • Juvenile bunions
  • Hypermobility, or flexible joints
  • Knock-knees
  • Bow legs
  • Abnormally shaped toes
  • Limping
  • Skin conditions including warts or fungal infections

What treatments will a podiatrist use?

Podiatrists treat specific conditions via methods that best suit the child. Depending on your child’s unique needs, they may be given a range of suitable treatments, including:

  • Orthotics
  • Education
  • Retraining
  • Strengthening
  • Braces
  • Splints and strapping

It is important to discuss any mobility or footcare problems your child may be experiencing with a podiatrist so they can advise on the most appropriate service or treatment to their needs.
