Seven tips to stay healthy at the races

Do the races in comfort and style this year, and make sure your mates stay healthy and safe.

1. Be prepared for the conditions (all of them!)

Check the weather forecast and make sure you’re ready for sun, wind and rain – we all know anything can happen in Melbourne! Sunscreen is number one, but an umbrella can’t hurt either.

2. Pace yourself

A day out at the races can be long, so make sure you don’t burn out.  You don’t need to be in top gear all day. Take time out through the day to stop and smell the roses.

3. Manage your alcohol intake

We know how easy it is to get swept up in the atmosphere and fill up on a few too many glasses of bubbly.  Be smart about your alcohol intake – set yourself a limit before the day starts and spread your drinks out, and be sure to keep hydrated with plenty of water in between each one.

4. Remember to eat

The day can race past with all the fun and festivity, but remember you are at the track for up to 8 hours, so a few snacks won’t cut it – especially if you’re drinking. Be sure to plan enough food and snacks to keep your energy up throughout the day.

5. Gamble responsibly

If you decided to have a bet, be sure to set a limit and stick to it. Simple as that.

6. Look after each other

If you attend with a group of friends, make sure everyone is having a good time and staying safe.  Check in on each other to make sure everyone has had enough water, something to eat, not too much to drink and is gambling responsibly.

7. Be patient

The races can be a long day of queues, from entering the track, to placing bets, buying food and drinks and lining up for the train home. There’s no way around it – so be patient and relaxed and the waiting will be much more enjoyable.

The races can be a fantastic day out. Make sure you do it in comfort and style, looking out for your friends so you all stay healthy and safe all day long.
