Assoc. Professor Tim Crowe explains how people who are successful in controlling their weight eat healthier, are more active and enlist the help of friends or other support to help in the fight. Even a small amount of weight loss of 5 to 10% will have dramatic health benefits.
The Australian Dietary Guidelines outline what is required for a healthy diet. Drink plenty of water and eat a wide variety of nutritious foods from the following groups;
- vegetables and legumes / beans – try baked beans on wholegrain toast
- fruit – the healthiest and cheapest snack available
- reduced fat dairy products or alternatives
- grain foods – choose wholegrain and high-fibre
- lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, seeds and beans – manage your portion sizes, trim the fat and maintain variety
Combine this with moderate activity for 60 minutes on most days of the week and you will be on your way to managing your weight and your health.
