As the calendar page flips from December to January to mark the arrival of the New Year, this time also presents an opportunity for us all to reflect, wipe the slate and set some new personal goals for the year ahead.
A common goal that many set for themselves is to ‘get fit and stay healthy’, so chances are you too have given some thought to committing to a healthier diet, a new exercise regime, cutting out a bad habit or just taking more time to relax.

Hitting the gym
If your resolution is to do more exercise, the GymBetter program lets you work out on your terms with pay-per-visit access to gyms in our network all across Australia. You don’t have to be a Medibank member to take advantage of GymBetter, but members do get a discount on every gym visit.
Using your extras to tune your body and mind
The new calendar year also means your annual limit for claiming on most extras treatments is reset. If you are covered for physio, Pilates classes might be just what the doctor ordered to get you in shape. There’s also a wide variety of Natural Therapies that are included in many extras packages - reflexology, kinesiology, Chinese & Western herbalism, exercise physiology, shiatsu, aromatherapy, homeopathy, to name just a few. The only thing worse than having your holiday ruined by the theft of your possessions, a cancelled flight or an unplanned hospital visit, is being left to foot the bill for such events yourself because you don’t have travel insurance. With these resolutions in mind, the New Year is also a great time to review your overall level of health cover to check you have the right support for your current situation.
How has your life changed since your last health cover review?
- Perhaps you’ve ‘coupled up’ since your last cover review? If so, you might want to consider streamlining your separate private health policies by taking out Couples Cover.
- If you’re looking for a new love in the New Year, you could check which of our Singles Cover options is the best suited for you.
- For younger members, if you’re soon to turn 25 (or have already) you will no longer be covered by your parents’ policy. You might want to consider Young Adult Cover to ensure you aren’t left uninsured.
- Likewise for parents, if your child is no longer covered under your policy you may want to review your cover to better align with your current life stage and specific health needs.
Are you planning to expand the family?
You might be thinking that 2017 is the year to add another member to your family. First things first, it’s worth checking that your current policy has you covered for your pregnancy. The important thing to remember is that some obstetrics-related services and treatments can have a 12 month waiting period for certain levels of cover… so you’ll need to have all this in place before conceiving.
