Livvi’s Place: for more inclusive playtime

A playground accessible for all children in Victoria, supported by the Medibank Community Fund.

The Touched by Olivia Foundation has a dream that one day, every community will have an inclusive playground. Since 2006, the foundation has been working to help improve the health and happiness of Australian children with disabilities, with a mission to create safe, accessible and inclusive playspaces that allow children of different abilities and ages to play together, side by side.

Today, there are seven Livvi’s Place playgrounds around Australia – and now, a one more is set to open in Lyndhurst in Victoria’s City of Casey. It will be the first inclusive playspace in Victoria’s south east, and will be founded upon the six principles of inclusive play:

    1. Everyone can play.
    2. Access to nature.
    3. Total experience.
    4. A connection to community.
    5. Play independence.
    6. Friendship.

    Playspaces for all children

To bring the Lyndhurst playground project to life, the Touched by Olivia Foundation was awarded a $22,500 Medibank Community Grant.

“Currently, children living in and around Lyndhurst have to travel for more than an hour just to access other inclusive play opportunities, so this will make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of children through physical play – and they’ll be having a lot of fun at the same time,” says Rita Mariglian, Medibank Head of Corporate Social Responsibility.

“We are pleased to be able to contribute to this project, which is promoting activity and outdoor play for all children, no matter their age or ability. Medibank is committed to supporting community initiatives that create healthier, vibrant and more inclusive communities, and this playspace will provide a valuable asset and lasting community legacy.”
