A light, nourishing breakfast, an energising afternoon snack, a sweetly healthy dessert… yogurt is one of those perfectly versatile foods that makes it a satisfying favourite in a healthy diet. So when we heard the news that Jalna, one of Australia’s most-loved natural yogurt companies, was releasing a new range of traditional pot-set yogurt with fruit, we couldn’t wait to give them a try.
We sampled all four flavours – blueberry, raspberry, mango and passionfruit. Each pot is filled with thick, creamy, Greek-style yogurt, with a layer of real fruit at the bottom, bringing a light and refreshing burst of natural sweetness when you reach the end. What I loved was that it wasn’t too sweet though – sometimes the strong taste of creamy yogurts can be overpowering, but this was very light and mild, which definitely convinced me that I was eating something natural and full of goodness.
In fact, Jalna Pure is made from all-natural ingredients, with no added sugars or anything artificial. No cane sugar, no gluten, no gelatin, no preservatives, colours or food acids of any kind. The milk is from the same farming families Jalna has been working with for more than 30 years, and the fruit is harvested from orchards in the Goulburn Valley and Far North Queensland. Plus, each pot contains 600 million+ aBc probiotic cultures. It’s also a good source of calcium – and as research shows most people don’t get enough calcium for optimal health, this is certainly a delicious way to make sure you get your nutritional fix.
So what does pot-set actually mean? A quick survey of a few colleagues found none of us really knew what makes pot-set yogurt any better than other yogurt. As it turns out, it basically means it’s much more natural. The yogurt is simply based on pure milk, blended with natural ingredients like fruit juice and set in the pot and fermented the traditional way – which means there are no shortcuts, no gums or stabilisers, and no artificial additives.
Jalna prides itself on the care and craftsmanship that goes into its products. Everything is made the traditional way – that’s why they spell “yoghourt” the traditional way too. Two years of research, trailing and tasting went into making a pure fruit yogurt that is set naturally in the pot. Taste testing occurs at 11 o’ clock every morning to ensure the yogurt lives up to standard. I like that kind of commitment!
I tried mixing the raspberry yogurt with muesli, and I can confirm it makes a deliciously filling breakfast that kept me feeling bright and energised – even through a long Monday morning. On its own, it also makes a refreshing post-gym snack, and is perfect for an after dinner treat when you want something light and tasty. Or really, any time of day…
